The 55 acres of forest surrounding the Kandalama
Tank have a rich variety of trees, medicinal plants and birds. Some
of the trees here are over 100 years old.
There are over 145 species of birds, which is
1/3rd of the species of birds found in Sri Lanka. The bird population
consists of arboreal, terrestrial and aquatic birds. Some of the
common birds found in Kandalama are Babbler, Flycatcher, Oriole,
Warbler, Wagtail, Barbet, Bee-Eater, Kite, Owl, Teal, Pelican, Sandpiper,
Egret, Heron, Stork, Ibis, Falcon, Plover, Tern, Dove, Pigeon, Parakeet,
Kingfisher, Swift, Hornbill, Woodpecker, Bulbul, and Sunbird. In
addition, to-date 6 varieties of endemic birds have been seen. These
include Ceylon Spur-Fowl, Ceylon Jungle Fowl, Ceylon Grey Hornbill,
Ceylon Small Barbet, Brown-capped Babbler and Black-capped Bulbul.
