Attidiya Bird Sanctuary
The remaining area of an extensive marshland that once existed around
Colombo. It is now a wildlife refuge and flood retention area for
Colombo. Over 150 species of birds have been recorded here. Otters
and mongoose feature among the 39 species of mammals found here. There
are also 52 species of butterflies and 37 species of dragonflies.
Birds include Little Cormorant, Indian Darter, Black Bittern, Yellow
Bittern, Watercock, Indian Pond Heron, Purple Herons, Little Egrets,
Median Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Openbill, Lesser Whistling Teal, Black-headed
Ibis, Glossy Ibis, White-breasted Waterhen, Common Moorhen, Pheasant-tailed
Jacana, Stork-billed Kingfisher, White-breasted Kingfisher, Purple-rumped
Sunbird, Loten's Sunbird, Brown-headed Barbet and Ceylon Small Barbet.
